Projekt NOW

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

I’ve been recently working on a TOP-SECRET project that involves all my time and finger-jamming.  Actually, it’s not top-secret as much as an all-inclusive resort of school activities.  There’s homework to finish, books to read, presentations to present, a thesis to create, and yet another website to build.  I am going on a mission to go to museums to which I’ve never been next week, and will come back with reviews and feelings!  Stay tuned.

Oy.

Remember the post I wrote about the guy who was caught with manga (aka alleged porn for a pedophile)?  Well, that case finally came to a close, and unfortunately, Christopher Handley lost and will now spend 6 months in jail*.  Ridiculous.

Yes, kids, reading Naruto may land you in prison someday.

*To be fair to Mr. Handley’s decision to not appeal, his other options were paying $250,000 and/or a maximum sentence of 15 years.  I get why he didn’t fight the 6 month sentence.  But, damn.

This is definitely a blow to the comic world, manga world and modern literature in general.

Picasso on eBay

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Happy 2010!  I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday!

This year, I get to start off with a stupidity.  Here’s a question: would you go to eBay to buy a painting by Pablo Picasso?  Apparently, there are people who do.  And for those special little sprinkles, a man named Michael Zabrin started a business selling alleged Picassos, Dalis and Chagalls – making over a million bucks off them.  Usually the confusion between real and fake paintings is a sore point with me, but this time I’m just too amused.

Anyways, if you want to purchase a painting, treat it like a visit to the doctor.  Before you buy into what they say, always get a second and third opinion.  Check the provenance (ex. who had the work before you did, all the way down the line until you get to the artist).  If you can’t afford a Picasso and no one gave it to you this Christmas, there are a ton of contemporary artists whose awesome works will lighten up any hallway in your apartment.  Seriously, just look around.

NEA and hip hop, yo

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

I’m not one to write about politics generally, but I’d like to give a mention to our new chairman, Rocco Landesman, of the NEA (National Endowment of the Arts) which for those not in the know is “a public agency dedicated to supporting excellence in the arts, both new and established; bringing the arts to all Americans; and providing leadership in arts education” (quoted off their site).  Personal feelings aside about what should be funded (and I know some of you have deep personal feelings about the whole agency), I just wanted to comment on some current articles (Lee Rosenbaum’s article on WSJ in particular) that are specifically CREATING controversy.  Why, Ms. Rosenbaum?
